Leo's Boys done it again

Leo's Boys done it again

The weekend of the 9th of October 2010 Leo`s Boys tug of war club from Benburb travelled to the beautiful district of Kessingland beach, close to Ipswich. This was an end of season competition jointly organised by, The tug of war Association and The tug of war Federation and consisted of four weights pulled on Saturday and four on Sunday, the weights were ; 600k, 620k, 640k, 660k, 680k, 720k and a 4 x 4 mixed wt at 600k and 660k. There were some 13 clubs involved in total, Holland who just won a silver medal at the World championships in South Africa a couple of week previous, Raunds who had pullers win a gold medal at the U K`s held in Enniskillen in August past, Leek of days gone by, St Quens from Jersey, and a host of other clubs.

Leo`s had their sights firmly set on the 600k and had trained very hard over the past six weeks to prepare for this weight, last time they visited this Region they were defeated in the semi-final of the 600k and had something to prove. The 600k had 9 teams in one sections and and our boys started of rather nervous but gained full points of York and Triple F and were looking good as the competition progressed, Holland were also looking good and our second last pull we met, this was a three ender but to everyone's delight we came out with two points, one ahead of Holland and therefore we won the 600k with Holland runners up.

The 640k was next and we were 8 kilos light , but after winning the 600k we were on a high. this weight was pulled in two sections of 5 each and we had Holland in our group. When we met it was obvious there was a little advantage in the ground on one end, We both won our ends on the good side and thanks to our lucky coach we won the toss and the third end. With two top teams from each section making semi finals we were convinced we might meet Holland in the final again, we were top of our group and Holland second by one point. The officials twisted things by deciding, because of the time factor, we would only have a top two final, Holland was out and we would meet Raunds in the Final. The most memorable pull of the week-end was about to happen, we under estimated Raunds to begin and after two end we had a point each, the judge called the coached to toss for the third  end and we had a lucky coach from before, but it was not to be, Raunds had a man injured and we dropped a man and started the third end up the hill, all that training early in the year and the belief we had in each other had the crowd engrossed. The final whistle and the best performance even pulled by a Leo`s boys team made us the winners of the 640k.

Two more weights that day but we were not involved in either. Sunday, another fine weather day and pullers emerging from all parts of our holiday camp, Pulling started a little earlier, 620k was first and our 600k team from Saturday weighed in to this weight with 5 kilos to spare. This was more or less a repeat of the 600k the previous day and Leo`s had another gold medal. We had entered the 660k weight more in hope than anything else but we surprised ourselves and won a silver medal, Holland were the winners in this weight and possibly the best team of the week-end at this weight and a lot stronger than we were. The 720k was last and our pullers had joined up with two other teams for this weight. Again Holland outclassed everyone else but some of our buys won a bronze with Barton and some a silver with Raunds. So a week end not to forget, and what a way to finish off our outdoor season, three cups and gold and silver medals to treasure. Our ladies are starting to train for indoor now, so if interested come along.  Our club members on this week-end were ; Patrick Kernan, Jim Burns, Leo Collins, Aaron Knipe, Domnic Donnelly, John Beggs, Liam Gildernew, Barry Gildernew, Raurie Hughes, Stephen Hayden  and Mark Robinson
