Derryogue Competition

600kg and 680kg

Mourne Esplanade, Kilkeel

Saturday 23rd July at Mourne Esplanade was the scene for the most recent competition hosted by the Derryogue Club.

The bright sunshine made for a great afternoon with the scenery of the Mourne Mountains in the background and the sea lapping on the shore. The arena was well set up with a good crowd of spectators watching the proceedings, many of whom were pullers with the old Derryogue team of just a few years back. Like the new boys, they were also a hard team to break on the field.

Local teams from Garvagh and Bancran along with Mountain View and Binnion joined the Derryogue team for thecompetition.  The weigh in was conducted in the nearby bowling pavilion with pullers admiring the green and remarking how nice it would be to pull on such a surface!!!

5 teams entered the two weights at 600 and 680kgs.  In the first competition (600kgs) all of the teams were well matched with none of them
giving much ground.  In the round robin, Derryogue, Bancran, Mountain View and Garvagh once again with 7 men, finished in the pull offs.

Derryogue and Bancran finished on equal points, equal when they pulled each other with one end each, equal on cautions but with Derryogue 3kgs lighter finishing up in first place.  They were destined to meet Mountainview.  Garvagh and Bancran were the other semi finalists.

All four teams pulled extremely well on very hard ground.  Derryogue beat Mountain View whilst Bancran beat Garvagh. The final was another cracker with neither of the teams giving anything away.  Two good teams, at the peak of fitness, pitting themselves one against the other. Derryogue ran out as the eventual winners of this category.

In the 640kgs event, Mountain View made use of the services of some of Leos Boys team to make up the weight.  Bancran, Binnion, Garvagh and
the hosts Derryogue made up the other four teams.  Mountain View took to the field full of determination and never lost an end during the round robin.  Bancran, Garvagh and Derryogue finished up in the following three places to make up the semi finals.

Mountain View were destined to meet Bancran whilst Garvagh and Derryogue met in the second semi final.  Two straight ends each for Derryogue against Garvagh and a similar result from Mountain View against Bancran set up the final.  There was much support from many old friends from yesteryear around the arena, giving support to the local Derryogue team.  Mountain View were the stronger team on the day and finished off the afternoons competition by beating the ever improving team of Derryogue.

Mr Cathal McKeever spoke at the close of the competition, thanking Derryogue for hosting the competition, all of the teams for travelling a long distance and the local council for sponsoring the event with trophies and grounds.  Derryogue will now travel to Bedford for the United Kingdom 600 Championships and then to the European Championships in Minehead for the 560kg event.  Good luck to them and the other teams who will represent.
