Oxney Vines and York to compete at Leos Boys Competition
On May 4th Leo`s Boys tug of war club are holding an international tug of war competition in Benburb village.
Leos Boys have gone that extra mile this year and our star attraction from overseas is the famous Oxney Vines Cross club from Sussex in England. The Oxney club was formed in 1967 and over the last 45 years have won no less than;;-
61 national titles,
13 U K titles and
5 World or European titles.
Their coach from way back then, Dougie Reed, will also accompany the group of 16 pullers and staff, and hopefully Dougie will enlighten some of our local coaches.
Also in attendance this year are the boys from the York club. This is their 3rd visit to this competition and over these past few years they have become great friends with the Leo`s boys and girls.
Invitations have been sent to teams from all over Ireland and we are expecting quite a number of the top teams to attend. There are 3 weights on the day, 620kilos, 650kilos and a Catchweight. The weigh-in takes place this year, as usual , in the Bottle of Benburb from 12noon with the first pull at 1.oopm.
Our visitors will have a historic tour of the Benburb area and it is hoped they will enjoy a demonstration of our local sport, road boles.
In recent years N. Ireland are very fortunate to have tug of war clubs that rank among the best in the world. Our indoor teams are the reigning World Champions at 560 open and closed, a position they have held for the past 6 years.
Clubs from Cavan, Monaghan, Down, Armagh, Derry, Leitrim and Tyrone will attend this event at Benburb and the Bottle of Benburb will provide the refreshments and entertainment after a tough day.
Hope you will support your local tug of war club, Leo`s.
