Championship report

UNITED KINGDON CHAMPIONSHIPS,
CITY OF BELFAST PLAYING FIELDS, MALLUSK
FRIDAY 1ST AUGUST 2014
NORTHERN IRELAND WIN THREE GOLD, TWO SILVER AND ONE BRONZE.

FRIDAY MORNING STARTED OFF JUST AFTER SEVEN WITH A SHOWER OF RAIN THAT WAS SHOWING PROMISE OF BEING ON FOR A WHILE.  THE ARENA WAS TO BE SET UP FOR THE UNITED KINGDON CHAMPIONSHIPS AT MALLUSK AND JUST A LITTE BIT OF EASE IN THE WEATHER WOULD BE HELPFUL.

MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION TEAMS TURNED OUT IN FORCE AND IN SHORT SHRIFT, HAD THE ARENA SET UP WITH TENTS, TOILETS, FENCING ETC IN READYNESS FOR THE FIRST COMPETITORS AT 12.30PM.  TEAMS HAD ALL PREPARED WELL AND AFTER BEING STAMPED THE FIRST COMPETITION OF THE DAY AT 600KGS COMMENCED UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYE OF HUGH McFETRIDGE WHO WAS THE CHIEF JUDGE FOR THE EVENT.

COMPETITION IS RUN ON A ROUND ROBIN BASIS WITH THE TOP FOUR TEAMS IN EACH WEIGHT IN EACH COMPETITION GOING FORWARD TO THE SEMI FINALS AND THE ULTIMATE HUNT FOR THAT ELUSIVE GOLD MEDAL.

FIRST UP OF THE DAY WAS THE 600KGS CATEGORY, A WEIGHT AT WHICH THE BANCRAN TEAM HAD PREVIOUSLY SECURED THE GOLD MEDAL (2013).  NORTHERN IRELAND ENDED UP WITH TWO TEAMS IN THE TOP FOUR PLACES BUT AT SEMI FINAL LEVEL THEY WERE DESTINED TO MEET ONE ANOTHER.  SILVER MEDAL AT LEAST WAS ON THE HORIZON.

N.IRELAND A, THE TEAM FROM BANCRAN IN THE FOOTHILLS OF THE SPERRINS IN DRAPERSTOWN AND N.IRELAND B, LEOS BOYS FROM BENBURB IN TYRONE CAME TO THE FIELD WITH NOTHING TO LOSE.

N.IRELAND A WERE THE STRONGER FROM THE OFF AND TOOK THEIR PLACE IN THE FINAL ALONG WITH THE WINNERS OF THE OTHER SEMI FINAL ENGLAND B.

N. IRELAND B WERE THEN PLACED IN THE BRONZE MEDAL PULL OFF AGAINST ENGLAND A AND AFTER A STRONG AND HARD TWO ENDS, ENGLAND A SUCCUMMED TO THE STRENGTH OF THE TYRONE MEN WHO WENT ON AND TOOK THE FIRST MEDAL OF THE DAY.  WELL DONE TO THE LEOS BOYS.

IN THE FINAL, N IRELAND A TEAM (BANCRAN) WERE AHEAD OF ALL THE OTHERS BY THEIR EARLIER PERFORMANCES.  TWO WELL PULLED ENDS AGAINST ENGLAND B, WITH NOTHING GIVEN OR EXPECTED SAW N.IRELAND TAKE THE COVETED TAYLOR WOODROW 600KG TROPHY, GOLD MEDAL AND RETAIN THEIR TITLE OFUNITED KINGDOM CHAMPIONS FOR THE SECOND TIME.

INTO THE AFTERNOON THE WEIGHT STEPPED UP A CATEGORY TO 680KGS AND AGAIN NORTHERN IRELAND WERE REPRESENTED BY TWO TEAMS IN THE FORM OF GARVAGH AS N.IRELAND B AND ONCE AGAIN THE BANCRAN MEN AT N.IRELAND A WHO HAD MADE A FEW CHANGES.

COMPETITION DEMANDS EVERYTHING FROM EVERYONE IN THE ROUND ROBIN STAGES AND AT 680KGS THIS WAS THE BATTLE OF THE BIG BOYS. NOT TO BE OUTDONE THE TWO LOCAL TEAMS BATTLED WELL WITH N.IRELAND A FINISHING IN THE FOURTH PLACE JUST ONE POINT BEHIND THE THIRD PLACED TEAM FROM ENGLAND.

THIS TIME ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND HAD BEEN THE DOMINANT TEAMS AND WERE LOOKING AHEAD TO TAKING SOME OF THE TOP MEDALS.  SCOTLAND HAD BEEN LAST YEARS GOLD MEDAL WINNERS AND WERE AIMING TO RETAIN THEIR TITLE.

IN THIS GAME THE TEAM FINISHING IN FIRST PLACE PULLS THE TEAM IN FOURTH PLACE WHILST THE TWO TEAMS IN SECOND AND THIRD PULL IN THE SECOND SEMI FINAL.

NOT TO BE OUTDONE N.IRELAND TOOK ON THE ENGLAND A TEAM  AGAIN.  TABLES WERE ABOUT TO BE TURNED AND WITH THE GRIT, STRENGTH AND DETERMINATION THAT HAD BEEN EVIDENT ALL DAY BY THE LADS FROM BANCRAN, THE N.IRELAND A TEAM TOOK THEIR RIGHTFUL PLACE IN THEIR SECOND FINAL OF THE DAY.

BRONZE MEDAL PULL OFF WAS BETWEEN SCOTLAND A AND ENGLAND A WITH THE MEDAL BEING AWARDED TO SCOTLAND A.

THEN ONTO THE FINAL OF THE DAY.  ENGLAND B AND N.IRELAND A CAME OUT TO THE ROPE WITH THE CENTRE JUDGE DAI EVANS FROM WALES IN CHARGE.  NEITHER TEAM GAVE ANYTHING AWAY BUT ONCE AGAIN THE GRIT AND SHEER DETERMINATION FROM THE LOCAL LADS SHONE THROUGH.  THIS WAS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST PULLS OF THE DAY WITH ONE END LASTING FOR 5 MINUTES AND EIGHT SECONDS IN THE FINAL.

FIRST END WON AND GOING TO N.IRELAND IT WAS BACK INTO BATTLE AGAIN FOR THE GOLD MEDAL.  AGAIN THE LOCAL LADS SHOWED GREAT PATIENCE AND RESOLVE ON THE ROPE AND AT ONE STAGE WERE JUST THREE FEET FROM BREAKING BEFORE TURNING IT AROUND WINING A FANTASTIC GOLD MEDAL AT 680KGS, AND THEIR SECOND TAYLOR WOODROW TROPHY OF THE DAY.  WELL DONE AGAIN TO BANCRAN.
