THIRD CHAMPIONSHIPS OF THE INDOOR SEASON

THIRD CHAMPIONSHIPS OF THE INDOOR SEASON

680 AND 600 NI CHAMPIONSHIPS

Saturday 22nd November saw the start of this years indoor Championships at the Goodyear Sports Centre in Craigavon.  Friday night had been busy with the individual scales coming into play at the Benburb farm of Norman Millar.  Weighing done and the entry sheets checked, teams were stamped and ready for the start of the Competition.  First up was the 680 event run in the round robin style with a final.  All of the teams were well matched and up close on the weight.

Richhill and Country Club took to the mats for the final which was a good contest.  The mats became endy with all three pulls going in the same direction after a very good final between two determined teams.  Country Club took the 680 Gold medal closely followed by Richhill.

Then it was onto the five a side at Catchweight.  Seven teams came to the mats with Leos Boys, Ballyhegan A and B, Richhill A, B and C and Country Club.  This was a straight league which took some time due to there being only one mat.

On Saturday night 6th December it was the turn of the lighter weight at 600kgs.  Again many had chosen to weigh in on Friday night making it easy to check and stamp the teams for the start of the competition.  Richhill fielded two teams with Ballyhegan and Country Club fielding the others.  All of the competition was held on the one mat with the direction of the mats changed to take them further away from the opening door.  All of them were close on the weight and the competition went through quickly in the round robin stages.  Semi finals saw Country Club destined to meet Richhill B whilst Ballyhegan were to take on the Richhill A team.  This was a good competition with Country Club once again coming to the top closely followed by Ballyhegan.   The Kernan Trophy was presented to the winning coach of Country Club.

The other two scheduled faive a side weights kicked off again with seven teams in the catchweight and four in the 400kgs.  Same as the previous week with a cumulation of points going to the gold medals at the end of the four Championships.  The seven teams took to the two mats and the competition was kept running by Jim Burns and William Montgomery and again it was a straight league for the allocated points as given.

THIRD CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE SEASON AT 560KGS

FIVEMILETOWN High School was the latest venue for the third Championship of the season.  This was an excellent find by Simon and Vernon.  Great standard of hall, correct length, well set out.  Certainly a good find.  But into the Championships.  Everyone had availed of the FRIDAY night weigh in, making it an easy transition for the stamping.  All the teams were close to the weight so it was all down what happened on the mat.

round robin over Ballyhegan and Country Club came to the top for the final.  This was a good final with both teams pulling well, but the Country Club team weren't to be denied their third Championship of the season.

next it was down to the five a side at CATCHWEIGHT. Christmas nights out cut the number of teams and only one of the teams would have been up on the weight.  This time it was up to BALLYHEGAN to lead the field and take the maximum points followed by Country Club.
